AXOLOTL

AXOLOTL

The axolotl is a unique amphibian native to the lakes and canals of Xochimilco in Mexico. Known for its adorable, permanent smile and feathery gills, the axolotl is famous for something even more incredible - its ability to regrow limbs, spinal cords, and even parts of its heart and brain! Unlike most amphibians, axolotls stay in their aquatic larval form their entire lives, meaning they never fully develop into land creatures.

Unfortunately, they are critically endangered due to habitat loss and pollution, but they are popular in scientific research and aquariums worldwide.

These "walking fish" may be small, but their fascinating biology makes them a true marvel of nature.
